During 24 September 2020 - 21 February 2021 you are invited to visit the exhibition „Constantin Daniel Rosenthal. An artist in the time of revolution”, shown on the occasion of the anniversary of 200 years since the birth of Romanian painter Constantin Daniel Rosenthal, the artist who gave Romanian culture the emblematic paintings ”Revolutionary Romania” and „Romania breaking her chains at Liberty Plains”.

This is the second and largest monographic exhibition about C.D. Rosenthal. The first, opened in 1970 at the RSR Art Museum, showed only 11 works and was not accompanied by an album.

„Fifty years after the only exhibition on C.D. Rosenthal, we estimate that this event is a great opportunity both for a well-deserved re-evaluation of the artist’s work, in the context of the then modern Romanian art, and for reflection on the cross-roads between art and politics, a perfectly contemporary topic”, says Monica Enache, curator of the exhibition.

The album accompanying the exhibition gathers all the artist’s works identified in museums and private collections in Romania and abroad, some unknown and unpublished until now. Being able to research a wider array of works allowed the curators to modify the dating, in some cases, to identify personalities portrayed by C.D. Rosenthal, to propose decipherments of symbolic elements or of hidden, often conspiratorial, messages.
In the same volume you will discover all the letters addressed by C.D. Rosenthal to C.A. Rosetti, fellow 1848 revolutionary, as well as a letter to doctor Adolf Grünau. The letters were kept in the archives of the Romanian Academy Library and the National Library.
Many of these manuscript letters were desciphered, translated and published in their complete version for the first time on this occasion. They unveil a world and a way of living almost lost to any person living in the 3rd millenium.

„The 1848 Revolution taught us what we should have known, alas, much sooner: to start the reform by reforming ourselves before meddling in others people’s business”, C.D. Rosenthal wrote to his friend C.A. Rosetti on 30 January 1851.

The exhibition and the album benefitted from the financial support of the „Friends of the National Museum of Art of Romania” Association.
