Species of Spaces. Works from the Société Générale Collection

Species of Spaces features works by 24 artists whose paintings, sculptures and photographs in the Société Générale collection highlight important recent developments and thus become the starting point for a more in-depth analysis of these areas.

The selection reflects the collection’s diversity from the perspective of subjects, media and style as much as from that of the artists’ generation and geographical coverage. The manner in which works are organised draws on ideas put forth by Georges Perec in his 1974 book Espèces d’espaces – Species of Spaces, a title borrowed for the present exhibition. Perec’s essay frames a poetical typology of spaces and the behaviours they entail or dictate, of the manner in which cities and maps, pages and rooms, real or metaphysical boundaries limit or stimulate imagination.

The selection is complemented by a series of works which look deeper into these ideas through the practice of four artists: Farah Atassi, Julien Prévieux, Danica Dakić, and Florian & Michael Quistrebert are genuine `study cases`, the more encompassing presentation of their collection piece adding several extra layers of meaning as to the artists’ conceptual or stylistic approach.

Ideogram Studio designed the exhibition is a manner which contributes to the overall conversation about spaces, walls, membranes, perspectives and vantage points. A series of `corners` create four imaginary `rooms` set at different angles among themselves and with the two exhibition halls. The new limits and dynamic thus created highlight the juxtaposition of different shapes, the varying intensity and resonance of spatial imagination as expressed by the works on display.
