The Anatomy of Restoration
A compelling exhibition that tells the story of how damaged works of art are brought back to their original glory and given a new lease of life through the painstaking efforts of dedicated conservation experts.
Eighty works of art reveal the complexity of conservation procedures carried out by expert staff in all of the museum’s specialist laboratories. From paintings by famous masters to fragile drawings and ceramics by anonymous craftsmen, from sculpture to furniture, every object underwent some form of ‘surgery’ before meeting visitors in a permanent or temporary show. Their regained beauty is now scrutinized in an attempt to shed more light on a profession most appreciated when invisible.
